This four-year project will explore the use of simulations for formative assessment in teacher preparation.
The project will engage in mathematics and will involve preservice teachers (PSTs) and teacher educators preparing them to teach grades K-5. In collaboration with project Principal Investigator Meghan Shaughnessy at Boston University, co-Principal Investigator Timothy Boerst will lead the U-M team to provide administrative and intellectual leadership to the project, and engage with project Co-PI Nicole Garcia in the design, training, conduct of studies, and dissemination activities relevant to the project’s three research foci:
- Using simulations to support the improvement of PSTs’ practice
- Investigating issues of simulation validity and reliability
- Exploring characteristics of the simulation performance space
