From Convocation to Commencement, Carrick Copeland (they/them/theirs) oversees a variety of meetings and events for the School of Education and provides administrative management for Deborah Rivas-Drake, Associate Dean for Diversity, Inclusion, Justice, and Equity (dije) for the School of Education.

A proud transgender, queer, and neurodivergent person with disabilities, Carrick is a lifelong advocate for diversity, inclusion, justice and equity (dije), and a steadfast supporter of educators. They believe that educators play a critical role in the lives of their students, especially those from powerful communities targeted for oppression, as they provide and promote vital access,  inclusion, and equity.

Before joining the School of Education, Carrick served in a variety of intersectional non-profit social justice-focused roles, including as a Challenging Racism facilitator and trainer at the YWCA of Greater Flint, Special Events manager at Affirmations LGBTQA+ Community Center, and, most recently, as the manager overseeing Transgender Aging and Health Program at SAGE Metro Detroit.

In addition to being a busy parent of four children, Carrick volunteers as a Gender Affirming Care Community Advisory Board Member at Planned Parenthood of Michigan and as a Community Expert Committee Member for Michigan Medicine’s Comprehensive Gender Services Program. Certified as a trainer by The Transgender Training Institute, they also provide educational opportunities related to transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming cultural competency.
