Susan Dynarski recognized for authoring one of 2017 most read education articles

Susan Dynarski was recognized by the American Educational Research Association for writing one of their ten most popular journal articles in the field of education research. Her article, “The Gap Within the Gap: Using Longitudinal Data to Understand Income Differences in Educational Outcomes,” was co-written with Katherine Michelmore.

Their article seeks to develop a new measure of economic disadvantage. Dynarski and Michelmore investigated academic performance among students periodically eligible for subsidized meals as compared to students continually eligible for the program, finding that there is a negative, linear relationship between the number of grades spent in economic disadvantage and eighth grade test scores. Their proposed measure could aid in better targeting of resources for affected students.

Articles like theirs “exemplify the high quality of scholarship being published by AERA and being produced in the field of education research,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine.

Susan Dynarski is Professor, School of Education; Professor of Public Policy, Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy; Professor, Department of Economics, College of Literature, Science, and the Arts
