SOE project featured in CityLab article “Detroit Imagines a Citizen-Led Smart City”

CityLab’s Amy Crawford reported on the collaborative project Sensors in a Shoebox, which aims to provide unique educational experiences to Detroit teens through the use of sensor technology. Sensors in a Shoebox, led by Elizabeth Birr Moje and Jerry Lynch (College of Engineering) is funded by grants from the Knight Cities Challenge and National Science Foundation. Teens work with adults to integrate community interviews and sensor data in order to track various aspects of their neighborhoods like pedestrian traffic, outdoor temperature, and air quality.

Reporter Amy Crawford focused on the way in which this project empowers the community through a “bottom-up” approach to urban technology that aids citizens in exploring their neighborhoods and developing their own solutions.
