Nicole Artz receives Big 10 Medal of Honor

The University of Michigan Athletic Department presented the 2016-17 Big Ten Medal of Honor to Nicole Artz and Jake Butt. These two student athletes received the honor based on their proficiency in scholarship and athletics.

Artz—a U-M gymnast— will graduate with a degree in elementary education and is currently student teaching a third-grade class at Pattengill Elementary in Ann Arbor. She becomes the seventh women's gymnast to earn the award in the last seven years. A two-year team captain, Artz is a 2016 Academic All-American, three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, three-time NACGC/W Scholastic All-American, and two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.

The Big Ten Medal of Honor was the first award in intercollegiate athletics to demonstrate support for the educational emphasis placed on athletics. It was acclaimed throughout the nation, and in particular by the NCAA "as one of the significant gestures yet made in college sports." The Big Ten Medal of Honor was expanded in 1982 to include one female student-athlete from each institution.
