Nell Duke quoted in New York Times article on project-based learning


Professor Nell K. Duke was quoted in a New York Times article titled “Preaching the Value of Social Studies, in a Second Career.” The article, written by Kate Taylor, follows the experiences of New York teachers, administrators, and schools using project-based learning units.

Duke commented on the tendency for elementary schools to neglect social studies and science in favor of focusing on literacy and math. This is despite the fact that the Common Core learning standards call for elementary students to spend more time reading what the standards call “informational texts,” which social studies and science are full of. “A common reaction to kids who are living in lower socioeconomic-status environments and going to lower socioeconomic-status schools is to sort of remediate or make the curriculum lower order or less challenging,” Duke said. “I think pretty much the opposite is the way to go.”
