Nell Duke presents at Fordham on expectations for students and ambitious literacy instruction

Professor Nell K. Duke presented on ambitious literacy instruction at Fordham University GSE on May 2. Dr. Duke cited research on the impact of teachers’ expectations on student performance, and the prevalence of lowered expectations for students of color and students from lower SES households. Drawing on her own research and writing, Duke described strategies to shift expectations; strategies include reducing implicit biases, teaching-specific professional development, and curricular changes.
