Nell Duke interviewed on radio show With Good Reason

Professor Nell Duke was featured on a nationally distributed radio program of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, With Good Reason. Duke answered questions regarding early childhood literacy for a six-part series titled, “Degrees of Separation.”

Professor Nell Duke described what researchers have discovered about the emergence of literacy, indicating the importance of early intervention for students who show signs that literacy is difficult to acquire. Currently, 64% of fourth graders are not considered proficient readers based on the results of the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Professor Duke shared her research findings on the different learning environments and reading materials available to students in high-income and low-income areas, and explained the long-term impacts on children and adults who lack literacy skills.
