Michelle Bellino honored with 2018 CAE Outstanding Book Award for Youth in Postwar Guatemala: Education and Civic Identity in Transition

Professor Michelle Bellino’s book, Youth in Postwar Guatemala: Education and Civic Identity in Transition, has been awarded the 2018 Council on Anthropology on Education (CAE) Outstanding Book Award. The award committee is pleased to honor Bellino’s contributions to anthropology and education, stating that they are “especially impressed with her richly textured ethnographic accounts of youth in schools, households, and communities as they develop their civic identities within a fragile postwar democracy.”

The committee was guided by a set of criteria that included examining the impact of the work on the field. The committee concluded that “theorizing post-war discourses and experiences of youth has the potential to significantly impact the construction of global discourses relating to democracy and how these are reflected in educational policy and practices.”

The awards ceremony will be held at the annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association in San Jose, California, on Friday, November 16.

Michelle J. Bellino is Assistant Professor
