Michael Bastedo cited in two Chronicle articles

Professor Michael Bastedo, Director of the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education, was cited in two articles appearing in The Chronicle of Higher Education on March 12, 2017.

The first article, “Working Smarter, Not Harder, in Admissions,” follows changing application review processes at several top universities. With growing applicant pools, many schools face overworked admissions staff and concerns about how best to review applicants in a short period of time. This has led some to pursue new approaches to their review processes. Bastedo’s research has shown how biases can shape admissions officers’ decisions. He comments on the benefits of the team-reading strategy pursued by the University of Pennsylvania and Swarthmore College, but warns that the new model by itself won’t solve the common problem of having too little contextual information about applicants.

The other article citing Bastedo’s work, also on the subject of college admissions, is “‘A Belief Change’ in Admissions.” The piece features an interview with Yvonne Romero da Silva of the University of Pennsylvania. She cites Bastedo’s work on admission officers’ biases as a reason for adopting a process which relies on two admissions officers simultaneously reviewing an application.
