Mary Schleppegrell receives the AERA Second Language Research Special Interest Group award

The American Educational Research Association (AERA) Second Language Research Special Interest Group awarded the Leadership Through Research Award to Professor Mary Schleppegrell. Reviewers from this special interest group acknowledged the “major impact” of her work, saying that it will have “a lasting impact on educational linguistics for some time to come.”

Among Schleppegrell’s nominators and letter writers, one noted that her work “raised the field’s awareness of the linguistic complexity in academic texts and fostered understanding of the various features that make such texts challenging for children,” adding that it “has also influenced P-12 teaching and learning across the country.”

At the annual AERA conference in April, Schleppegrell will deliver an acceptance speech that will center around her work and its relevance to the field of second language research.
