Deepa Fernandes interviewed Elizabeth Birr Moje for a story which aired on KCRW’s Press Play with Madeleine Brand, a radio show that examines issues in the Los Angeles area. Fernandes was reporting on poor literacy rates among students in California public schools.

Moje described the specific training in literacy instruction that teacher education programs must provide to educators. Specialized knowledge of emergent literacy prepares teachers to work on children’s literacy in all subject areas. Understanding how language works and is acquired allows teachers to diagnose and respond to the struggles that their students encounter. Moje also explained that all teachers must have high quality texts available to support their teaching and their students’ learning.

Elizabeth Birr Moje is George Herbert Mead Collegiate Professor of Education and Arthur F. Thurnau Professor; Dean of the School of Education
