Don Peurach quoted in Ed Week about new Gates Foundation initiative

Professor Don Peurach was quoted in an Education Week article about a new Gates Foundation initiative for K-12 education. About two-thirds of the Gates’ $1.7 billion pledge will go toward an initiative to improve curricula and scale-up best practices in middle and high schools. In moving forward, the foundation is expected to utilize the concept of improvement science, forming networks that test out multiple approaches to solving problems. This aspect is promising, says Peurach, who has studied networked improvement in education.

"It recognizes a need that improvement will require breaking out of conventional, hierarchical bureaucratic structures,” and into new types of relationships, he said. Still, he cautions, “it’s a lot harder to do well than many people expect.”

Donald J. Peurach is Associate Professor
