Kevin Miller has been awarded a grant from the Department of Education, for a project entitled, "Modeling and Developing Situation Awareness in Teachers" in the amount of $816,936 for the period 9/1/2007 to 8/31/2010.
In both popular conception and theoretical models, a hallmark of skilled teachers is their ability to monitor the complex, chaotic environment of a classroom and hone in on key features relevant to monitoring student understanding and maintaining student attention. This ability, termed “situation awareness” (Endsley, 1995) is central to the performance of many complex activities. We know very little about how teachers manage their attention while teaching, and even less about how this ability develops. The proposed project will develop basic models of situation awareness in teaching and how this ability changes with expertise.

The Learning Mathematics for Teaching (LMT) project develops, validates, and disseminates measures for evaluating the effectiveness of programs designed to improve teachers' content knowledge for teaching mathematics. Different from conventional measures of teachers' content knowledge in mathematics, these measures investigate teachers’ mathematical knowledge as it is used within particular tasks of teaching. For instance, these measures not only assess whether teachers know that 35 x 25 = 875, but also whether teachers can analyze and understand different student methods for solving this problem, or identify the cause of student errors when performing this computation. We have used these measures to study teacher learning in the context of California’s Mathematics Professional Development Institutes, finding that teachers who studied longer and reported more focus on communication, representation, justification and proof posted higher gain scores. These measures are also being used broadly in other evaluations and scholarly research, including many Math-Science Partnerships. To date, we have trained over 350 individuals – including scholars from Canada, Ireland, South Korea, and South Africa – in their use. This work is supported by National Science Foundation grants REC-0207649, EHR-0335411, and REC-051746.

The study characterizes the criteria present in 8 undergraduate introductory calculus texts that (1) allow a reader to decide why a procedure for solving a problem is the one that should be applied, and (2) provide mechanisms to verify that the answer is still correct. Such criteria is referred to as the control structure. It is hypothesized that the criteria depends on the intended audience of the book (applied, honors, or regular). Results will inform subsequent research on how introductory calculus instructors make the structure explicit in their teaching.
