Standard Teaching Certificate*

Initial Standard Certificate

The initial teaching certificate is issued in Michigan upon successful completion of a state approved teacher preparation program and passage of the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) and OPI (Oral Proficiency Exam) for world languages only.

The Standard Teaching Certificate is a five-year teaching certificate with unlimited renewals. Each renewal adds five years to the certificate’s validity. A renewal can be requested any time after January 1 of the expiration year.

Standard Renewal

Information about Standard Teaching Certificate Renewal is available through the Michigan Departmen of Education. Applications are submitted online through MOECS (Michigan Online Educator Certification System).

*The Standard Teaching Certificate replaces the Provisional Teaching Certificate pursuant to Admnistrative Rule 390.1101.
