Teacher & Administrator Certification

Additional Endorsements

Adding an Endorsement

There are two ways that individuals who hold a valid Michigan teaching certificate can add endorsements that will enable them to teach additional grade levels or subject areas. The first is through our traditional program, and the other is through our alternate route program.

Traditional Program
In order to add an endorsement to an existing Michigan provisional or professional teaching certificate through our traditional program the candidate must complete an endorsement program of 20 to 50 semester hours of approved coursework (for secondary, depending on the subject) or between 30 and 36 semester hours (for elementary, depending on the subject). They must also pass the appropriate content area MTTC exam. Testing alone does not certify a teacher.

The traditional program is a credit-bearing program of the University of Michigan. Courses are transcripted at the undergraduate course-level and are subject to tuition and fees set by the Board of Regents of the University of Michigan.

More information is available in the Adding an Additional Endorsement to your Existing Teacher Certification document.

Submit the following documents to the Teacher Education Program office:

Please allow 2-4 weeks for processing. For more information, contact the Teacher Education Program at te.program@umich.edu or 734.615.1528.

Alternate Route Program
The Michigan Alternate Route to Certification (M-ARC) additional endorsement pathway is designed for Michigan teachers who want to add an endorsement to their existing provisional or professional teaching certificates without leaving the classroom. M-ARC candidates begin teaching under interim teaching certificates in their new content areas upon entrance to the three-year program.

Additional endorsements may be added in the following content areas:

  Elementary (Grades K-8)

  Secondary (Grades 6-12)

  All Subjects K-5

  English

  Self-Contained Classroom 6-8

  Math

  Language Arts 6-8

  Science (Biology, Chemistry, Earth/Space Science,
Integrated Science, Physical Science, or Physics)

  Math 6-8

  Social Studies (Economics, History, Political
  Science, or Social Studies)

  Integrated Science 6-8

World Languages (French, German, Italian, Latin,
  or Spanish)

  Social Studies 6-8

  Spanish K-8

During the program, candidates must be placed by their employers to teach in the content areas for which they are seeking endorsements while participating in M-ARC. Over the course of the three-year (six-semester) program, most classes will meet in the evenings on the U-M Dearborn campus.

M-ARC is a non-credit bearing continuing education offering of the School of Education. Fees for the program are determined annually by the School of Education. There is an opportunity for M-ARC candidates to apply to the School of Education’s Urban Teaching and School Leadership master’s program. Candidates who enroll in the master's program will receive graduate credit for a portion of M-ARC program coursework.

For details about program eligibility, enrollment, and cost, please visit the M-ARC Additional Endorsement Pathway website. You may also contact the program office by email at M-ARCprogram@umich.edu or by phone at 734.764.9712.
